Study on the cracking mechanism of hydraulic and supercritical CO2 fracturing in hot dry rock under thermal stress

Summary: This study investigates the cracking mechanism under thermal stress in HDR using SCCO2 fracturing. The results show that cryogenic induced thermal stress can reduce cracking pressure, formation of branch fractures, more micro fractures generated by SCCO2, and better cooling efficiency and capability of extending fractures with hydraulic fracturing in HDR.
