An Effective Cold Storage Method for Stockpiling Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Eggs for Field Surveys and Laboratory Rearing of Trissolcus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae)

Warren H. L. Wong et al.

Summary: Refrigerating H. halys egg masses at 8 degrees C before parasitism results in higher emergence rates of T. japonicus compared to freezing at -80 degrees C. Cold storage at 8 degrees C has minimal sublethal effects on the emerging parasitoids, making it a more suitable method for stockpiling eggs for T. japonicus rearing and field studies. After two months, the emergence of T. japonicus begins to decrease significantly, while egg masses frozen at -80 degrees C experience a much greater reduction in parasitoid emergence.

Pre-emptive host-specificity testing of Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) reveals high parasitism levels against the endemic New Zealand alpine shield bug in laboratory no-choice tests

Summary: The Brown marmorated stink bug is a serious horticultural pest with the potential to cause significant damage. The samurai wasp has shown promise as a biological control agent against this pest, and recent studies have confirmed its ability to parasitize certain New Zealand stink bug species, including the endemic alpine shield bug Hypsithocus hudsonae.

Seasonal Abundance and Diversity of Egg Parasitoids of Halyomorpha halys in Kiwifruit Orchards in China

Gonzalo A. Avila et al.

Summary: This study conducted surveys to assess the abundance and diversity of egg parasitoids of brown marmorated stink bug in kiwifruit orchards in China. Five parasitoid species were recovered, with Trissolcus japonicus and Trissolcus cultratus being predominant. The study provides valuable information on the abundance and effectiveness of T. japonicus in kiwifruit orchards for future biological control strategies.

Trissolcus japonicus foraging behavior: Implications for host preference and classical biological control

Robert Malek et al.

Summary: The research found that the Asian egg parasitoid wasp can locate its prey by searching for their footprints, with a more intense response to the footprints of H. halys compared to P. maculiventris. Additionally, the wasp intensified its searching behavior on footprints of all mobile nymphal instars of H. halys, with footprints remaining bioactive for up to 72 hours.

Predation of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys by the Japanese acrobat ants, Crematogaster matsumurai and Crematogaster osakensis

Matthew T. Kamiyama et al.

Summary: The study found that Japanese acrobat ants have a certain impact on the survival rate of Halyomorpha halys nymphs, reducing their numbers in their native range. However, they may need to act in conjunction with other natural enemies to cause mortality in different growth stages of H. halys.

Summary: Through the ZINB model and GAMM, it was found that temperature significantly affects the trap catch of H. halys, while precipitation has no effect. The study provides the first forecasting models for native H. halys population dynamics based on degree days, improving population forecasting and filling knowledge gaps for efficient management of this globally invasive species.

Modelling the Potential Geographic Distribution of Two Trissolcus Species for the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, Halyomorpha halys

Tania Yonow et al.

Summary: The brown marmorated stink bug, native to Asia, has become a key pest in Europe and North America by feeding on important crops. Studies suggest it may also spread to Australia, prompting research into management options. Models of its potential distribution and that of its natural enemies show overlap, indicating potential for biological control.
