Increased nitrogen fertilization inhibits the biocontrol activity promoted by the intercropping partner plant

Leyun Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the population dynamics of two specialist aphids, English grain aphid and pea aphid, as well as the biocontrol activity of the generalist predator, harlequin ladybird beetle. The presence of an intercropping partner plant enhanced the control of both aphid populations by the predator. Increasing nitrogen fertilizer levels decreased predation rates, affecting the biocontrol activity of the natural enemies of insect pests.

Reduction in the potential distribution of bumble bees (Apidae: Bombus) in Mesoamerica under different climate change scenarios: Conservation implications

Oscar Martinez-Lopez et al.

Summary: The study finds that all bumble bee species are predicted to undergo a reduction in distribution and habitat suitability due to projected climate change. Models based on low emission scenarios suggest a distribution loss ranging from 7% to 67% by 2050, with reductions more evident at the margins of their distribution. The findings also indicate that climate change will lead to a shift in altitude and distance away from the current geographic centroid of bumble bee species.

On the Interpretations of Joint Modeling in Community Ecology

Giovanni Poggiato et al.

Summary: This article explores the mathematical links between species distribution models (SDMs) and joint species distribution models (JSDMs), emphasizing that both models are unable to separate environmental effects from biotic interactions. The authors provide a guide to help determine when JSDMs are preferable to SDMs for species community modeling. Ultimately, the article calls for a better understanding and adoption of novel statistical developments in biodiversity modeling.

Habitat loss and range shifts contribute to ecological generalization among reef fishes

Rick D. Stuart-Smith et al.

Summary: The study indicates that generalist fish species are more successful in responding to habitat disruption and climate change, and may increase generalization on a large scale. Changes in habitat structure have consistent impacts on the community structure of fish in coral and rocky reefs.

Summary: The study found that ignoring the biological characteristics of invasive species and including biologically informed assumptions in SDM design can lead to the development of complex SDM models, which may not provide a complete picture of potential invasion scenarios.
