The Gum-Gut Axis in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: A Hypothesis-Driven Review of Associations and Advances

Kevin M. Byrd et al.

Summary: The oral cavity is increasingly recognized as connected to systemic diseases, with the periodontium and gingiva playing a central role in the oral-systemic relationship. Over 50 systemic conditions have been associated with gingival and periodontal inflammation, including recent investigations into the mechanistic links with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Bidirectional impacts have been observed between IBD and periodontitis, driven by chronic oral or intestinal inflammation, although precise mechanisms remain unclear.
