Higher Levels of Stress Are Associated With a Significant Symptom Burden in Oncology Outpatients Receiving Chemotherapy

Katarina Jakovljevic et al.

Summary: The study evaluated differences in symptom severity among cancer patients with distinct stress profiles, with three subgroups identified: stressed, normative, and resilient. Patients in the stressed group had the highest symptom severity scores for fatigue, lack of energy, sleep disturbance, and cognitive function, indicating a significant impact of stress on symptom burden.

Sexual dimorphism in the contribution of neuroendocrine stress axes to oxaliplatin-induced painful peripheral neuropathy

Larissa Staurengo-Ferrari et al.

Summary: This study found that stress has a significant impact on oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic pain, with clear gender differences in the role of the two major neuroendocrine stress axes. The findings demonstrate the importance of the neuroendocrine stress axes in CIPN and highlight the sexually dimorphic nature of the condition.

Sexual dimorphism in the nociceptive effects of hyaluronan

Summary: The study found that the duration of LMWH-induced hyperalgesia was longer in female rats, and this hyperalgesia is influenced by GPR30 mRNA and RHAMM; pretreatment with ODN antisense for RHAMM and CD44 can attenuate LMWH-induced hyperalgesia; in vitro experiments showed that HMWH treatment in male rats can alleviate LMWH-induced hyperalgesia.

Duloxetine against symptomatic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity in cancer survivors: a real world, open-label experience

Roser Velasco et al.

Summary: Female gender and short-term CIPN were independently associated with a favorable response to duloxetine, while male gender and long-lasting CIPN significantly limited its use. A minority of cancer survivors with CIPN treated with duloxetine had a meaningful improvement in symptoms, with overall low tolerability.

Duloxetine reduces pain after Total hip arthroplasty: a prospective, randomized controlled study

Hao Li et al.

Summary: This study found that perioperative administration of 60mg duloxetine daily significantly reduced pain severity upon movement, resting pain, morphine requirements, and increased satisfaction level at discharge within 3 weeks after total hip arthroplasty. However, there was no clinically meaningful difference between the duloxetine group and the placebo group in terms of pain reduction. Adverse events did not differ between groups.

Cortisol level dysregulation and its prevalence-Is it nature's alarm clock?

Carol Jones et al.

Summary: This review examines the role of the stress hormone cortisol in regulating bodily functions and its impact on health, especially in chronic conditions. It emphasizes the importance of timely detection, screening, and treatment for noncommunicable diseases, and highlights the pro-inflammatory consequences of cortisol dysregulation and its deleterious effects on the body. The relevance of these findings is particularly evident in light of recent research on COVID-19 and its pro-inflammatory cytokines linked to severe inflammation.
