Production of sustainable smart packaging based on cassava starch and anthocyanin by an extrusion process

Thais M. A. R. D. Vedove et al.

Summary: This study utilized cassava starch and a natural pH indicator to produce sustainable smart packaging through a twin-screw extrusion process. The research found that thermoplastic starch sheets incorporated with 20 mg ATH/100 g showed the best behavior as a smart packing indicator for meat storage, with higher variation of Delta E* and most visually notable color change.

Blends of Poly(vinyl alcohol) and Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone): Interrelation between the Degree of Hydration and Thermal and Mechanical Properties

Petros Oikonomou et al.

Summary: Blends of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) readily absorb water when exposed to external humidity. The physical properties of the blends, including glass transition temperature (Tg) and mechanical properties, are affected by the increase in water content, with a linear relation between the weight fraction of absorbed water and the blend composition observed. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed that the depression of Tg with increasing water content could be accurately described by empirical equations, and the Young modulus of hydrated samples experienced a significant decrease when the blend transitioned from a glassy to rubbery state.
