Depicting SARS-CoV-2 faecal viral activity in association with gut microbiota composition in patients with COVID-19

Tao Zuo et al.

Summary: This study reveals active and prolonged 'quiescent' gastrointestinal infection of SARS-CoV-2 in patients with COVID-19, even without gastrointestinal manifestations and after recovery from respiratory infection. Patients with active SARS-CoV-2 gastrointestinal infection have a gut microbiota characterized by enrichment of opportunistic pathogens and an increased functional capacity for nucleotide and amino acid biosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism.

Systems biology approaches to study lipidomes in health and disease

Marina Amaral Alves et al.

Summary: Lipids play important roles in biology, such as energy storage and cell membrane structure. Lipid metabolism is tightly regulated, and disturbances in lipid-related pathways are involved in the pathogenesis of common diseases. Advances in lipidomics provide new methods for lipid research.

Dysregulation of lipid metabolism and pathological inflammation in patients with COVID-19

Marianna Caterino et al.

Summary: This study utilized targeted lipidomic analysis coupled with proinflammatory cytokines and alarmins measurement to investigate the serum of COVID-19 patients with different severity degrees. The study measured serum IL-26, a cytokine involved in the IL-17 pathway, TSLP, and adiponectin, and correlated them with lipid profiles of COVID-19 patients, providing important insights for the classification of the disease and the identification of therapeutic targets.

Metabolomics analysis reveals a modified amino acid metabolism that correlates with altered oxygen homeostasis in COVID-19 patients

Jose C. Paez-Franco et al.

Summary: Using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, we identified significant changes in serum metabolites associated with severe and mild COVID-19 patients, particularly in altered amino acid catabolism. The study found that three alpha-hydroxyl acids of amino acid origin increased with disease severity, correlating with changes in oxygen saturation levels and clinical markers of lung damage. The conversion of alpha-keto acids to alpha-hydroxyl acids is suggested to play a role in maintaining NAD recycling in patients with altered oxygen levels during SARS-CoV-2 infection, highlighting the potential importance of amino acid supplementation.

Defective NET clearance contributes to sustained FXII activation in COVID-19-associated pulmonary thrombo-inflammation

Hanna Englert et al.

Summary: The study shows that increased expression and activity of FXII are found in lung tissues of COVID-19 patients, and NET accumulation leads to FXII contact activation. Additionally, insufficient DNase contributes to NETs accumulation, exacerbating FXII activation.
