Zircon and monazite geochronology in the Palmer zone of transpression, south-central New England, USA: Constraints on timing of deformation, high-grade metamorphism, and lithospheric foundering during late Paleozoic oblique collision in the Northern Appalachian orogen

D. P. Moecher et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the geology and geochronology constraints in the Central Maine and Bronson Hill zones of the southern New England Appalachians, revealing crustal shortening and magmatism caused by high-angle oblique convergence during the late Paleozoic. These findings provide important insights into the understanding of Earth's tectonic evolution and collisional tectonics theories.

Deformation-enhanced recrystallization of titanite drives decoupling between U-Pb and trace elements

Stacia M. Gordon et al.

Summary: Titanite is a common accessory mineral used for age and pressure-temperature determinations, but prone to recrystallization during metamorphism. The study on deformed titanite crystals from Norway revealed some grains recording exhumation dates and others with inherited isotopic compositions. Many trace elements in titanite are unaffected by deformation-driven recrystallization, but lead is variably mobile in deformed titanite crystals.

Rise and fall of the Acadian altiplano: Evidence for a Paleozoic orogenic plateau in New England

Ian W. Hillenbrand et al.

Summary: High elevation orogenic plateaus are formed by a complex interplay of deep and surficial processes, with evidence of the existence of such a plateau during and after the Devonian Acadian orogeny. The crustal evolution of this paleo-plateau is constrained by new petrologic and geochronologic databases, revealing characteristics of doubly thickened crust, widespread metamorphic conditions, and mid-crustal anatexis, indicating the development of a high elevation plateau. The collapse and thinning of the plateau crust may have led to sharp Moho depth variations and influenced various geological processes.

Paleozoic evolution of crustal thickness and elevation in the northern Appalachian orogen, USA

Ian W. Hillenbr et al.

Summary: The Acadian and Neoacadian orogenies in the New England Appalachian Mountains involved two phases of Paleozoic crustal thickening, leading to the formation of doubly thickened crust and an orogenic plateau. The Neoacadian crustal thickness shows a strong correlation with metamorphic grade, while geobarometry in southern New England underestimates crustal thickness and exhumation.

Protracted intra- and inter-pluton magmatism during the Acadian orogeny: evidence from new LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon ages from northwestern Maine, USA

David Gibson et al.

Summary: Devonian granitoid plutons in northwestern Maine show diverse mineral characteristics and indicate early and late stages of magmatic activity during a 45 million year period. The production of I-type and S-type magmas, with some plutons showing prolonged intrusive activity, suggests complex geological processes at play in the region. The new ages provided by LA-ICP-MS analysis help to reveal the timing and duration of magmatism in the area, shedding light on the tectonic evolution of Ganderia.
