Zirconium-modified natural clays for phosphate removal: Effect of clay minerals

Jingwan Huo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of Zr-modified clays on phosphate adsorption, showing that Zr-modified montmorillonite had the fastest kinetics and highest capacity. The different performances of Zr-modified clays may be attributed to the distinct expansion properties. All Zr-modified clays demonstrated robust phosphate adsorption under various water chemistry conditions, with inner-sphere surface complexes formation being proposed as the primary mechanism.

One step electrochemical exfoliation of natural graphite flakes into graphene oxide for polybenzimidazole composite membranes giving enhanced performance in high temperature fuel cells

Jianuo Chen et al.

Summary: A 3D-printed reactor was designed for electrochemical exfoliation of natural graphite flakes to obtain high degree of oxidation graphene oxide. By adjusting the electrolyte concentration and reaction time, the degree of oxidation can be further increased. The electrochemically exfoliated graphene oxide was successfully used to prepare composite membranes for high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, resulting in significant improvement in peak power density.

Degradation study of high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell under start/stop and load cycling conditions

Jingjing Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted 600-hour accelerated stress tests on high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) and found that load cycling between 0.04 and 0.2 A cm-2 aggravates performance degradation. Activation polarization was identified as the main factor contributing to performance degradation, while ohmic polarization had a smaller impact. Severe acid loss emerged as a critical issue for the long-term durability of HT-PEMFC.

Recent advances in phosphoric acid-based membranes for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Zunmin Guo et al.

Summary: Efforts to design and develop phosphoric acid-based proton exchange membrane for high-temperature fuel cells have been made globally. Various approaches, including crosslinking, introducing antioxidative groups, and incorporating inorganic materials, have been proposed to mitigate the degradation of the membranes. Crosslinking, blending with stable polymers and inorganic materials, and preparing polymers with high molecular weight are recommended to improve membrane mechanical strength. Three promising approaches to improve the durability of HT-PEMFCs include crosslinking, incorporating hygroscopic inorganic materials, and increasing membrane layers or introducing strong basic groups and electron-withdrawing groups.
