Short-range ordering and its effects on mechanical properties of high-entropy alloys

Yuan Wu et al.

Summary: This letter summarizes the formation and characterization of short-range orderings (SROs) and their effects on the deformation behavior of high-entropy alloys (HEAs). It shows that tuning the degree of SROs is an effective way for optimizing the mechanical properties of HEAs. The challenges and future research activities regarding the formation mechanism and characterization of SROs in HEAs are also discussed.

C and N doping in high-entropy alloys: A pathway to achieve desired strength-ductility synergy

M. Y. He et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have garnered significant attention for their versatile possibilities in obtaining exceptional properties, with applications expected in industries such as aerospace and biomedical science. Enhancing mechanical properties for HEAs through interstitial alloying relies on factors like the content of interstitial atoms, microstructures, and element distributions. Recent progress has focused on exploring the interaction between interstitial atoms and HEAs with different crystal structures, as well as the influence of microstructures on bulk mechanical properties, in order to guide the development of more advanced HEAs.

Hierarchical grain size and nanotwin gradient microstructure for improved mechanical properties of a non-equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

Zibing An et al.

Summary: This study investigated a multi-mechanism approach to enhancing the mechanical properties of a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy through non-equiatomic alloy design and processing. The alloy exhibited improved yield strength, tensile strength, and uniform elongation, as well as significantly increased toughness after rotationally accelerated shot peening treatment. The enhancement in strength was attributed to various strengthening mechanisms associated with the heterogeneous microstructure of the alloy. The occurrence of multiple deformation mechanisms contributed to achieving suitable strain hardening and ensuring steady plastic deformation for high toughness.

Direct observation of chemical short-range order in a medium-entropy alloy

Xuefei Chen et al.

Summary: The study provides direct experimental evidence of chemical short-range atomic-scale ordering (CSRO) in a VCoNi medium-entropy alloy through diffraction and electron microscopy analysis. The research demonstrates that using specific crystallographic directions can reveal CSRO in face-centred-cubic VCoNi concentrated solution, offering insights into atomic packing configuration and dislocation interactions enhanced by CSROs.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have emerged as a research hotspot in the field of metal materials in the past decade. They exhibit much better corrosion resistance than traditional corrosion-resistant metal materials and the correlation among composition, microstructure, and corrosion resistance of HEAs has been revealed. The influence of heat treatment, anodizing treatment, and preparation methods on the corrosion behavior of HEAs has also been elaborated.
