Alloys-by-design: Application to new superalloys for additive manufacturing

Summary: New grades of gamma/gamma' nickel-based superalloy for the additive manufacturing process were designed using computational approaches, with processing trials carried out using powder-based selective laser melting. The superior processability and mechanical behaviour of the new alloys were demonstrated through microstructural characterisation, calorimetry and hot tensile testing. Suggestions for refinements to the modelling approach were also made.

Summary: Metal printing is widely used in key industries to produce complex parts that are difficult to manufacture conventionally, with metallurgy, mechanistic models, and machine learning driving its continued growth. Additive manufacturing allows for the printing of metallic parts with specific chemical compositions and properties, but the selection of alloys, printing processes, and variables results in a diverse range of microstructures, properties, and defects that impact the serviceability of printed parts.

Direct fabrication of single-crystal-like structure using quasi-continuous-wave laser additive manufacturing

Summary: The synchronous periodic re-melting of molten pool was successfully introduced in additive manufacturing for promoting epitaxial growth of columnar structure, resulting in the production of highly oriented single-crystal-like samples. The modified molten-pool geometry and the synchronously high-frequency re-melting of the molten pool were found to contribute to the formation of single-crystal-like structure. This study demonstrates a new route to continuously promote the epitaxial growth of dendrites for fabricating single-crystal-like samples.
