Luminescence behavior of PMMA films doped with Tb(III) and Eu (III) complexes

A facile approach for the creation of heteroionic lanthanidomesogens-containing uniform films with enhanced luminescence efficiency

Summary: Adducts of Eu(III), Tb(III), Gd(III) and La(III) tris(beta-diketonate) were synthesized to form mesophases, which can produce optically isotropic, self-organizing smectic films on cooling. The luminescence intensity per mole of the emitting substance in films obtained from mixtures of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes increases about three fold compared to the individual Eu(III) complex, attributed to effective energy transfer between Tb(III) and Eu(III) complexes. This study presents an efficient approach for creating novel lanthanide-containing materials with effective luminescence and controlled spectral properties.
