A critical review on bismuth oxyhalide based photocatalysis for pharmaceutical active compounds degradation: Modifications, reactive sites, and challenges

Peng Gao et al.

Summary: Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX)-based photocatalysis is capable of efficiently removing pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs), but faces challenges such as rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and inherent instability of structure. Recent modification studies have focused on facet control, elemental doping, bismuth-rich strategies, defect engineering, and heterojunction to address these issues.

Construction of FEOOH/semiconductor nanosheets heterogeneous catalysts for efficient photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Hongfei Yin et al.

Summary: Effective heterogeneous catalysts for the removal of refractory organic pollutants are highly desirable. In this study, FeOOH/BOBC-2 hybrids were found to exhibit superior performance as photo-Fenton catalysts for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation. Factors such as catalyst dosage, TCH concentration, H2O2 amount, and initial pH were investigated and found to significantly affect the performance of the catalyst. Enhanced specific surface areas and effective charge separation were key contributors to the improved photo-Fenton performance.

C-, N-Vacancy defect engineered polymeric carbon nitride towards photocatalysis: viewpoints and challenges

Abhinandan Kumar et al.

Summary: Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4; GCN) is a metal-free polymeric semiconductor material with fascinating physicochemical and photoelectronic structural features, yet its wide-range applicability is limited by inherent drawbacks such as rapid reassembly of photocarriers and low specific surface area. Introducing vacancies into the framework of GCN to generate 0D point defects has shown potential in manipulating optical absorption, radiative carrier isolation, and surface photoreactions. Various advanced strategies for controlled designing of vacancy-rich GCN have been explored, highlighting the significance of defect engineering on optical absorption, charge isolation, and surface photoreaction ability in GCN. Applications of defect engineered GCN include photocatalytic water splitting, CO2 conversion, N-2 fixation, pollutant degradation, and H2O2 production.
