Probe on hard carbon electrode derived from orange peel for energy storage application

T. Meenatchi et al.

Summary: Using chemical activation method, activated non-graphitizable hard carbon with mesoporous structure was prepared from orange peel pyrolyzed at different temperatures. Increasing carbonization temperature and using NaOH as activating agent can increase pore diameter to facilitate Na+ insertion. Characterization techniques such as Raman, X-ray diffraction, SEM, and N2 adsorption revealed the morphology, mesopore size, and surface area of the orange peel-derived hard carbon. This study provides strong evidence that biomass-derived hard carbon with good porosity can lead to superior electrochemical performance in emerging sodium ion batteries.

Quantum-Matter Bi/TiO2 Heterostructure Embedded in N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets for Enhanced Sodium Storage

Man Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel anode material with heterostructures made of Bi/TiO2 quantum dots embedded into N-doped carbon nanosheets. The integrated design greatly reduces the migration energy barrier of Na+, promotes electron/Na+ transportation, and enhances the electric conductivity and electrochemical reactivity. The Bi/TiO2 HQDs subset of NC hybrid nanosheets show excellent sodium storage properties with high reversible capacity, high rate capability, and long cycle life.

COVID-19 pandemic and emerging plastic-based personal protective equipment waste pollution and management in Africa

Nsikak U. Benson et al.

Summary: The threat of plastic waste pollution in African countries has been increasing exponentially since the declaration of the coronavirus as a pandemic. Factors contributing to this threat include increased consumption of single-use plastics, lack of proper waste management infrastructure, and urbanization. The widespread use of plastic-based personal protective equipment during the pandemic has led to a significant amount of waste being generated, with billions of masks being disposed of every month. This expert insight aims to draw attention to the potential risks of COVID-generated plastics and the environmental impacts that may exacerbate the existing plastic pollution crisis in Africa.
