Electronic properties of black phosphorus using monochromated low-loss EELS

I. Benabdallah et al.

Summary: This study utilizes monochromated low-loss electron energy-loss spectroscopy to investigate the bandgap and exciton energies of black phosphorus flakes in the near infrared region. The research successfully demonstrates the ability of this technique to reveal unprecedented electronic and excitonic transitions in very narrow bandgap semiconductors.

Predicting anomalous quantum confinement effect in van der Waals materials

Kamal Choudhary et al.

Summary: Materials with van der Waals bonding can exhibit an anomalous quantum confinement effect (AQCE) where the band gap trend is reversed. Through computational methods, materials showing AQCE were identified, including hydroxides, oxide hydroxide compounds, Sb-halogen-chalcogenide compounds, and alkali-chalcogenides. The AQCE is characterized by a lowering of the conduction band in the monolayer and changes in the electronic orbital contribution. Further investigation suggested these materials are not topological, and the computational results may lead to experimental validation and impact band-gap engineering applications using low-dimensional materials.
