Methodological Aspects of Meta-Analyses Assessing the Effect of Blood Pressure-Lowering Treatment on Clinical Outcomes

Mattias Brunstrom et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of important methodological considerations for systematic reviews and meta-analyses, particularly focusing on the effect of blood pressure-lowering on clinical outcomes. It also discusses the pros and cons of different analytical strategies.

Sympathetic Neural Mechanisms Underlying Attended and Unattended Blood Pressure Measurement

Guido Grassi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the differences in blood pressure values when measured with or without a doctor present. The results showed that there were significant increases in blood pressure and sympathetic nerve traffic when BP was measured in the presence of a doctor, while there were modest decreases in these values during unattended BP measurement. This suggests that the presence of a doctor during BP measurement may affect cardiovascular and neural responses.

Summary: Rosuvastatin (10 mg daily) reduced major adverse cardiovascular events by 24% compared to placebo in participants at intermediate cardiovascular risk. The benefits of rosuvastatin continued to accrue for at least 3 years after cessation of treatment, indicating a legacy effect.

Summary: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that pharmacological blood pressure reduction can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in the elderly, with no variation in relative risk reduction based on age and baseline blood pressure levels, and greater absolute risk reductions in older age groups.

Summary: Rosuvastatin significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events in participants with intermediate cardiovascular risk compared to placebo. The benefits of rosuvastatin continued to increase during post-trial observation period, while blood pressure lowering did not affect the overall study outcomes.
