Pollutant Dissipation at the Sediment-Water Interface: A Robust Discrete Continuum Numerical Model and Recirculating Laboratory Experiments

Guillaume Drouin et al.

Summary: Pollutant exchange in the hyporheic zone is a major process controlling its degradation in river systems. The study combined laboratory tracer experiments and a flow reactive transport model to investigate mass exchange at the sediment-water interface (SWI). The experimental and numerical results showed good agreement, confirming the robustness of the model in capturing interactions between pollutant transport and partitioning in river sediment.

Distribution, Mobility and Fate of Trace Elements in an Estuarine System Under Anthropogenic Pressure: the Case of the Karstic Timavo River (Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy)

Elena Pavoni et al.

Summary: Two main environmental issues in coastal environments are the accumulation of contaminants and their potential mobility. Research has found enrichment of trace elements in surface sediments, especially in the innermost sector, with crucial Fe and Mn redox behavior in the recycling of dissolved trace elements in the water column.

Application of geochemical modelling software as a tool to predict the diagenetic reactions between the marine connate water and the salt dome in a petroleum system

Marcos Antonio Klunk et al.

Summary: The field of geochemical modelling has rapidly developed since the early 1960s to predict concentrations of dissolved chemical species and understand the behavior of different elements in geological environments. Constructing geochemical models to predict species behavior based on numerical simulations and empirical data is crucial in correlating with geological evidence. The study aims to predict hydrocarbon reservoir quality by analyzing diagenetic reactions between marine water and salt domes in a petroleum system, using software like PHREEQC, GWB, and TOUGHREACT in batch and 1D modes. Simulation results show differences in curve profiles at various temperatures, emphasizing the importance of selecting compatible software for accurate analyses.

Evaluating the impacts of on-site sanitation facilities and saltwater intrusion on shallow groundwater quality in peri-urban communities of Cape Coast, Ghana

Joseph T. Zume et al.

Summary: This study in peri-urban communities of Cape Coast, Ghana, found high levels of enteric bacteria contamination in domestic wells, largely due to impacts of on-site sanitation facilities. Wells located within 25 m of septic tanks/toilet facilities had higher contaminant loads compared to those further away. Additionally, wells located closer to point sources with water tables within 2 m below the land surface demonstrated higher contaminant loads.

Saltwater Intrusion and Submarine Groundwater Discharge: Acceleration of Biogeochemical Reactions in Changing Coastal Aquifers

Willard S. Moore et al.

Summary: Saltwater intrusion into freshwater coastal aquifers is a global issue caused by over-pumping of freshwater and sea level rise. This intrusion impacts drinking water, agriculture, industry, and alters the biogeochemistry of subterranean estuaries, resulting in the release of nutrient-rich groundwater into the ocean. Climate change exacerbates sea level variations, potentially increasing saltwater intrusion and promoting biological productivity, but also posing risks to the environment and local ecology.
