Stemflow variability across tree stem and canopy traits in the Brazilian Cerrado

Kelly Cristina Tonello et al.

Summary: The Cerrado savanna in Brazil is the most biodiverse savanna in the world, playing a critical role in connecting rainfall and recharge processes for the Guarani aquifer in South America. This study investigated how morphological traits of major Cerrado tree species, such as bark texture, stem diameter, and canopy structure, influence stemflow generation. The results showed that tree size and canopy traits play a significant role in stemflow yield, emphasizing the importance of trait-based approaches in studying ecohydrology in the Brazilian Cerrado.

Exchanges of major elements in a deciduous forest canopy

Marie-Pierre Turpault et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the fluxes of five different elements in forests: dry deposition, foliar absorption, foliar leaching, accretion, and resorption. The research found that nutrient resorption mechanisms are similar in different soil types, and trees show increased absorption of calcium and silicon during senescence.

Rainfall partitioning and associated chemical alteration in three subtropical urban tree species

Zhi-Yun Jiang et al.

Summary: Rainwater is altered as it passes through tree canopies, with different tree species showing variations in partitioning of rainfall and solute composition. The study found that rainwater enriched with solutes after passing through the canopy, and different tree species had different characteristics in terms of leaching and absorption of solutes. These findings have significant implications for urban forest design in similar subtropical regions worldwide.

Rainfall partitioning in the Cerrado and its influence on net rainfall nutrient fluxes

Kelly Cristina Tonello et al.

Summary: This study investigated the water and nutrient enrichment in throughfall and stemflow among different tree species in the Cerrado region. It found that most elements and compounds were more concentrated in throughfall and stemflow, with each tree species contributing specific nutrients to the stemflow. Canopy exchange was often more dominant than dry deposition, with Cl and PO43- being taken up by the canopy.

Stemflow Infiltration Hotspots Create Soil Microsites Near Tree Stems in an Unmanaged Mixed Beech Forest

Johanna Clara Metzger et al.

Summary: The study revealed that stemflow infiltration areas are much smaller than typically assumed, serving as strong infiltration hotspots compared to throughfall, and significantly altering soil properties near tree stems. Even comparatively low stemflow fractions can generate impactful hotspots of water and matter inputs, influencing subsequent hydrological and biogeochemical processes and properties.
