A machine learning model to assess the ecosystem response to water policy measures in the Tagus River Basin (Spain)

Carlotta Valerio et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic activities are endangering biodiversity conservation globally, prompting the use of machine learning techniques to predict freshwater ecosystem responses to multiple pressures. By modeling biological responses to different nutrient concentrations, stricter thresholds could lead to significant improvements in aquatic biodiversity.

Macrophytes enhance reach-scale metabolism on a daily, seasonal and annual basis in agricultural lowland streams

Anette Baisner Alnoee et al.

Summary: The study found that in temperate streams with significant macrophyte abundance, macrophytes have a significant impact on annual gross primary production and ecosystem respiration, especially during the summer when biomass is highest. Macrophyte abundance and chlorophyll-a concentration account for 80% and 63% of the variation in annual gross primary production and ecosystem respiration in the macrophyte reach, respectively.

Hourly Prediction of Phytoplankton Biomass and Its Environmental Controls in Lowland Rivers

Devanshi Pathak et al.

Summary: High-resolution river modeling has been developed to simulate hourly scale phytoplankton growth and environmental controls in the River Thames. The model successfully captures diurnal variability and transport of phytoplankton, serving as a powerful tool for predictive purposes and past conditions reconstruction. Model sensitivity analysis shows that cool water diatoms as dominant species with an optimum growth temperature of 14 degrees C perform the best for phytoplankton prediction.

Hypoxia dynamics and spatial distribution in a low gradient river

Alice M. Carter et al.

Summary: Studies have found frequent occurrences of hypoxia in rivers and streams in the North Carolina Piedmont region, especially during warm and low flow periods. It is crucial to use new approaches to assess and compare oxygen levels in rivers.
