Association of Statins and 28-Day Mortality Rates in Patients Hospitalized With Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection

Zoe N. Memel et al.

Summary: The study found that in-hospital statin use was associated with reduced 28-day mortality rates among patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. This association held true regardless of whether patients used statins before hospitalization, but it had a greater effect in patients aged over 65.

Routine use of statins and increased COVID-19 related mortality in inpatients with type 2 diabetes: Results from the CORONADO study

Bertrand Cariou et al.

Summary: This study found a significant association between routine statin treatment and increased mortality in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Additionally, although patients using statins had similar rates of the primary outcome as non-users within 7 and 28 days, mortality rates were significantly higher in statin users.

Statins and clinical outcomes with COVID-19: Meta-analyses of observational studies

Andre J. Scheen

Summary: In univariate analysis, no significant reductions in either in-hospital mortality or COVID-19 severity were reported among statin users compared with non-users. However, after considering confounding factors, multivariable analysis showed that statin therapy may reduce the mortality and disease severity in COVID-19 patients.

Summary: The study revealed a significant reduction in mortality among COVID-19 patients who used statins. Even after propensity score matching, statin users continued to exhibit lower mortality rates.

Statins and clinical outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with and without Diabetes Mellitus: a retrospective cohort study with propensity score matching

Prateek Lohia et al.

Summary: The use of statin is associated with a significant reduction in mortality among COVID-19 patients, especially those with diabetes mellitus. The association between inpatient statin use and mortality is modified by the presence of diabetes mellitus, with reduced mortality observed in patients with DM but not in those without DM. These findings support further exploration through randomized clinical trials and suggest that inpatient statin use is safe for COVID-19 patients.

Hyperglycaemia increases mortality risk in non-diabetic patients with COVID-19 even more than in diabetic patients

Summary: In COVID-19 patients, hyperglycaemia is associated with worsening and outcomes. Regardless of pre-existing diabetes, high glucose levels are linked to increased mortality.
