Characteristics, source apportionment and health risk assessment of heavy metals exposure via household dust from six cities in China

Xiuge Zhao et al.

Summary: Research on heavy metals in household dust during heating and non-heating period in urban and rural areas in 2016-2017 found that Dalian was the most polluted city, while Shanghai and Chengdu were the least polluted cities. Longer ventilation times led to higher concentrations of heavy metals, with ingestion being the primary exposure route.

Profiling multiple heavy metal contamination and bacterial communities surrounding an iron tailing pond in Northwest China

Sha Li et al.

Summary: This study characterized the physicochemical properties, heavy metal contamination, and bacterial community structure of soils surrounding an iron tailing pond in Northwest China. The tailing-associated soils were barren with alkaline pH and low organic matter, nitrogen, and potassium compared to control areas. Multiple heavy metal pollution was observed in the iron tailing pond, impacting the bacterial community composition and distribution.

In situ monitoring of elemental losses and gains during weathering using the spatial element patterns obtained by portable XRF

Zhaoxian Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method to monitor geochemical variations on outcrop surfaces using a portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyzer, and discusses the elemental enrichment and depletion based on the spatial patterns of elemental concentrations. Laboratory results were compared with pXRF results, showing different results based on the calibration principles used. Different migration characteristics of elements were effectively distinguished based on the spatial pattern of elemental enrichment factors.

Human health and ecological risk assessment of trace elements in urban soils of 101 cities in China: A meta-analysis

Vaclav Pecina et al.

Summary: The study assessed urban soil pollution by trace elements in China and found that 11% of cities are heavily polluted. Some cities exceed the standardly accepted tolerable levels of risk, with urban green spaces being threatened. It is recommended to alter the policy of urbanization and develop green infrastructures adapted to high contamination levels.

Associations between short term exposure to ambient particulate matter from dust storm and anthropogenic sources and inflammatory biomarkers in healthy young adults

Jalil Jaafari et al.

Summary: The study found that in urban areas, the health effects of anthropogenic sources of particulate matter were higher than dust storm conditions; while in rural areas, the concentration changes of hs-CRP, IL-6, and WBCs under dust storm conditions were higher than inversion and cold season conditions.

Influence of mineral dust on the concentration and composition of PM10 in the city of Constantine

Kanza Lokorai et al.

Summary: This study identified the contribution of Saharan dust inputs to daily PM10 concentrations in Constantine, Algeria, with findings showing that mineral dust contribution on SD days was significantly higher than on non-SD days. SD events occurred 42.2% of the annual days, leading to a significant increase in PM10 concentration and most metal elements concentrations.

Spatio-temporal trends of dust emissions triggered by desertification in China

Xunming Wang et al.

Summary: The study on potential dust emissions from severe aeolian desertified lands and Gobi desert surfaces in China revealed significant spatial and temporal variations, with both landscapes being key sources of dust emissions. The contribution of the Gobi desert surfaces to dust emissions has decreased from the 1980s to the present, while the potential dust emissions from both types of landscapes have decreased significantly after 2000 compared to the 1970s. Despite model simulations suggesting higher dust emissions, actual potential dust emissions in China are lower than expected.

Distribution and secondary enrichment of heavy metal elements in karstic soils with high geochemical background in Guangxi, China

Qiong Yang et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution of heavy metal concentrations in soils was mainly controlled by the geological background. Heavy metal concentrations were lower in carbonate rocks compared to clastic rocks, but soils derived from carbonate rocks were more enriched with heavy metals. The enrichment of heavy metals in soils was primarily due to secondary enrichment processes.

Investigation of the 2018 Shiraz dust event: Potential sources of metals, rare earth elements, and radionuclides; health assessment

Sajjad Abbasi et al.

Summary: In May 2018, an unprecedented dust storm in Shiraz was found to be mainly influenced by air masses from Saudi Arabian deserts. The dust settled in Shiraz showed similarities with shale, sandstone, and Saudi Arabian soils, indicating their sources. High concentrations of toxic elements and rare earth elements in the dust were attributed to emissions from industrial activities and exhausts. The risk assessment revealed higher health risks for children compared to adults, with different pathways showing varying levels of risk.

Pollution characteristics, spatial distributions, and source apportionment of heavy metals in cultivated soil in Lanzhou, China

Lei Chai et al.

Summary: This study assessed the pollution levels of heavy metals in cultivated soils in Lanzhou using various indices and methods. The analysis revealed that most sampling sites had moderate ecological risk and insignificant health risks from heavy metals. The study also identified the sources of heavy metals in the area, providing valuable information for pollution source apportionment in other regions.

Qiumei Wu et al.

Summary: The study examined the distribution, ecological risk, and sources of heavy metals in soils in a typical coastal economic development area in Southeastern China. Industrial and residential soils showed higher enrichment of heavy metals compared to agricultural and fallow soils, with industrial emissions being the major driving factor.
