Exposure of nanoplastics to freeze-thaw leads to aggregation and reduced transport in model groundwater environments

Olubukola S. Alimi et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics exposed to freeze-thaw cycles in cold climates tend to aggregate and have reduced mobility, especially at low ionic strengths, despite the presence of natural organic matter. While NOM can enhance nanoplastic mobility, it cannot prevent aggregation under freeze-thaw conditions.

Impact of different modes of adsorption of natural organic matter on the environmental fate of nanoplastics

Jiayi Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of two sources of natural organic matter on the behavior of nanoplastics, finding that NOM could reduce the aggregation and sedimentation of NPs, showing excellent stabilization effect. The stability effect was affected by NOM concentrations and sources. Pedogenic NOMs caused stabilization effect through adsorption modes with different microscopic morphologies, while BSA induced stabilization through steric stabilization.

Vertical microplastic distribution in sediments of Fuhe River estuary to Baiyangdian Wetland in Northern China

Zeyan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study on the vertical microplastic distribution in estuary sediment of Fuhe River in northern China revealed that microplastic content decreased with depth, with the highest content in the topmost sediment layer. The smaller particle size and higher proportion of colored microplastics were found in deeper sediment layers. The spatial distribution of microplastics in sediments was closely related to human activities, with higher content in areas with more intense human activities.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon accumulation in aged and unaged polyurethane microplastics in contaminated soil

Tereza Cerna et al.

Summary: The study found that biodegradable polyurethane microplastics exhibited strong accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil over time, while conventional polyurethane microplastics showed lower sorption capacity for PAHs and did not change their sorption behavior after aging.

Nanoplastics are neither microplastics nor engineered nanoparticles

Julien Gigault et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have unique characteristics compared to microplastics and engineered nanomaterials, including transportation properties, interactions with natural colloids and light, high proportion of particle molecules on the surface, bioavailability, and diffusion times for plastic additives release. Nanoscale plastics must be considered distinct from both microplastics and engineered nanomaterials.

Summary: The study investigated the concentrations of airborne microplastics in indoor and outdoor environments in urban and rural areas of a coastal city in eastern China. The findings showed that indoor air had microplastic concentrations one order of magnitude higher than outdoor air, with urban areas having higher concentrations than rural areas. Airborne microplastics in the study were primarily fragments smaller than 100 μm in diameter.

Photolytic degradation elevated the toxicity of polylactic acid microplastics to developing zebrafish by triggering mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis

Xingli Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photodegradation process of biodegradable plastics under ultraviolet irradiation in water for 90 days, and compared the toxicities of virgin and degraded plastics to infantile zebrafish. The results showed that degraded plastics had reduced particle sizes and generated nanoparticles with higher hydrophilicity and stability. Degraded plastics exhibited higher bioaccumulation and skeletal development inhibition in zebrafish, with mechanisms including oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial damage and apoptosis identified as crucial.
