Antibiotics in surface water of East and Southeast Asian countries: A focused review on contamination status, pollution sources, potential risks, and future perspectives

Hoang Quoc Anh et al.

Summary: This review discusses the contamination status, sources, and ecological risks of antibiotics in surface water in East and Southeast Asia. Antibiotics were found to be ubiquitous in surface water, with different concentrations and distribution ranges in East Asian countries like China and South Korea compared to Southeast Asian nations. Effluent from wastewater treatment plants, aquaculture and livestock production activities, and urban sewage were identified as principal sources of antibiotics in surface water, while the ecological risks associated with antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance were highlighted. Collaborative efforts from various stakeholders are necessary to manage and reduce the burden of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in water bodies of East and Southeast Asian countries.

Enhanced photocatalytic water oxidation by hierarchical 2D-Bi2MoO6@2D-MXene Schottky junction nanohybrid

Gancheng Zuo et al.

Summary: In this study, hierarchical 2D-Bi2MoO6@2D-MXene nanohybrid was successfully fabricated by growing Bi2MoO6 nanosheets on the surface of MXene nanosheets, which suppressed the agglomeration of Bi2MoO6 and maximized the exposed activity sites. The Schottky heterojunction derived from MXene not only promoted photoinduced electron transport but also limited photoexcited electron-hole recombination, leading to enhanced visible-light photocatalytic water oxidation activity.

Application of FeIII-TAML/H2O2 system for treatment of fluoroquinolone antibiotics

Zeyu Xian et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the Fe-III-TAML/H2O2 system can effectively degrade FQs antibiotics, with the reaction rate increasing with higher pH levels and showing linear correlation with the added chemicals. The presence of natural organic matters has negligible impact on the removal of FQs, and the kinetics of oxidative degradation of the selected antibiotics are minimally influenced by NOM type and experimental concentration.

Amoxicillin photodegradation under visible light catalyzed by metal-free carbon nitride: An investigation of the influence of the structural defects

Ingrid F. Silva et al.

Summary: The structural defects of metal-free polymeric carbon nitrides were controlled using different precursors, leading to modifications in electronic, morphological, and chemical properties. The thiourea-synthesized material showed higher efficiency and stability in amoxicillin photodegradation, with a proposed mechanism based on ESI-MS and in situ EPR investigations.

Fabrication of visible-light-response face-contact ZnSnO3@g-C3N4 core-shell heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline contaminant and mechanism insight

Xiufeng Zhu et al.

Summary: A highly efficient and eco-friendly ZnSnO3@g-C3N4 core-shell heterojunction was successfully constructed, showing significantly improved photocatalytic performance by effectively separating electron-hole pairs and expanding visible light response. The contact interfaces in the face-contact ZSO-CN photocatalyst act as efficient channels for charge transfer, contributing to the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Carbon-based quantum dots (QDs) modified ms/tz-BiVO4 heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic performance for water purification

Yanan Liu et al.

Summary: By modifying carbon nitride quantum dots (CNQDs) and nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) with BiVO4 heterojunctions, the photocatalytic performance, especially the Rhodamine B (Rh B) photodegradation activity, was significantly improved. The enhancement is attributed to the effective photoinduced charge separation and inhibition of interfacial charge recombination by the ms/tz-BiVO4 heterojunction.

Constructing Zn-P charge transfer bridge over ZnFe2O4-black phosphorus 3D microcavity structure: Efficient photocatalyst design in visible-near-infrared region

Lijing Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed an innovative strategy to construct a three-dimensional microcavity structure of zinc ferrite/black phosphorus with Zn-P bonds, enhancing carrier transport and Gibbs free energy optimization of black phosphorus while improving sunlight utilization in the photocatalytic process. The optimized photocatalytic hydrogen production rate achieved under near-infrared light (>820 nm) provides new insights for designing full-spectrum photocatalysts based on high-quality black phosphorus for solar energy conversion.
