Comparative Biochemistry of Four Polyester (PET) Hydrolases**

Jenny Arnling Baath et al.

Summary: Research on enzymatic degradation of synthetic polymers, particularly PET, has been stimulated by the potential of bioprocessing in a circular plastic economy. A kinetic framework for comparisons of PET hydrolases acting on insoluble substrate has been proposed and tested, revealing that a variant of the PET hydrolase from Ideonella sakaiensis is the most efficient enzyme at ambient conditions. Additionally, both soluble and insoluble PET fragments were hydrolyzed faster than intact PET, suggesting that interactions between polymer strands play a role in slowing down PET degradation.

Implications for the PET decomposition mechanism through similarity and dissimilarity between PETases from Rhizobacter gummiphilus and Ideonella sakaiensis

Hye-Young Sagong et al.

Summary: Researchers have identified a novel PET hydrolase from Rhizobacter gummiphilus (RgPETase) that exhibits similar hydrolyzing activity to IsPETase towards microcrystalline PET, but shows distinct behavior towards low crystallinity PET film. Structural analysis reveals that RgPETase shares key structural features with IsPETase for high PET hydrolysis activity, but also has differences at the surface-exposed regions.

Engineered carbon supported single iron atom sites and iron clusters from Fe-rich Enteromorpha for Fenton-like reactions via nonradical pathways

Lijng Peng et al.

Summary: Enteromorpha, a seawater pollutant, was converted into a functional carbocatalyst for Fenton-like reactions. The Enteromorpha-derived Fe-N-C exhibited high activity in activating peroxymonosulfate for organic pollutant degradation. Single Fe atoms played a crucial role as dominant reactive sites in forming highly oxidizing Fe-IV=O and Fe-V=O species.

QM/MM Study of the Enzymatic Biodegradation Mechanism of Polyethylene Terephthalate

Sergio Boneta et al.

Summary: This study investigated the enzymatic biodegradation of PET at an atomic level using molecular dynamics simulations. Two hydrolases, Ideonella sakaiensis 201-F6 and leaf-branch compost cutinase, showed degradation activity towards PET. The study revealed a characteristic four-step degradation pathway for both enzymes, with LCC-ICCG variant outperforming PETase possibly due to its ability to work at higher temperatures and its intrinsic relationship with the crystallinity grade of the polymer.
