Different effects of nano- and microplastics on oxidative status and gut microbiota in the marine medaka Oryzias melastigma

Hye-Min Kang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that nanoplastics and microplastics have different pathways of impact on marine medaka, with nanoplastics inducing oxidative stress and microplastics causing intestinal damage and dysbiosis of gut microbiota.

Ecological stoichiometric and stable isotopic responses to microplastics are modified by food conditions in koi carp

Ming-Yan Ouyang et al.

Summary: Research shows that the interaction between MPs and different food conditions can affect the growth and nutritional composition of koi carp, which becomes more complex with prolonged exposure. C:P and N:P are identified as the most important parameters affecting the response of koi towards MPs and food restriction.

Effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) after individual and combined exposure with zinc oxide nanoparticles

Fernanda Neves Estrela et al.

Summary: The study found that short-term exposure to PS NPs affected fish's response to mirror tests, as well as induced inactivity towards alarm substances and DNA damage. Increased oxidative stress was observed, and while antioxidant levels were elevated, they were not sufficient to counteract the effects of free radicals produced by the treatment.

Intestinal response characteristic and potential microbial dysbiosis in digestive tract of Bufo gargarizans after exposure to cadmium and lead, alone or combined

Rui Zheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that co-exposure of Cd-Pb had more severe impacts on both Bufo gargarizans tadpoles and their intestinal microbiota, leading to growth retardation, intestinal histological injury, and decreased activities of digestive enzymes. Additionally, exposure to Cd and Pb, especially in mixed form, altered the diversity and richness of microbiota, with Proteobacteria significantly increased in tadpoles under metal exposure. The functional prediction suggested that the disorders of metabolism and immune responses of intestinal microbiota were increased in tadpoles exposed to Cd/Pb, especially the mixture of Cd and Pb.

Effect of Fish Bone Bioactive Peptides on Oxidative, Inflammatory and Pigmentation Processes Triggered by UVB Irradiation in Skin Cells

Andreea Iosageanu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the photoprotective effect of fish bone bioactive peptides (FBBP) isolated from silver carp discarded tissue on skin cells exposed to UVB irradiation and stressing agents. These peptides show cytoprotective activity, reduce ROS production, inhibit lipid peroxidation, decrease proinflammatory cytokines secretion, and lower melanin production and tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependent manner. The results suggest the potential use of FBBP as valuable natural ingredients in photoprotective cosmeceutical products.
