Spatial Distribution of Microplastics in Surficial Benthic Sediment of Lake Michigan and Lake Erie

Peter L. Lenaker et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution, concentration, particle size, and polymer compositions of microplastics in Lake Michigan and Lake Erie sediment were investigated. Fibers/lines were the most abundant of the five particle types characterized. Microplastic particles were observed in all samples with mean concentrations for particles greater than 0.355 mm of 65.2 p kg(-1) in Lake Michigan samples (n = 20) and 431 p kg(-1) in Lake Erie samples (n = 12).

Interactive effects of microplastics and selected pharmaceuticals on red tilapia: Role of microplastic aging

Yejing Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interactive effects between aged and virgin microplastics (MPs) and pharmaceuticals in aquatic organisms using red tilapia as a model fish. The results showed that MP aging could induce complex changes in the accumulation of pharmaceuticals and gene expression, leading to varied effects on aquatic organisms.

The occurrence of microplastic in Mu Us Sand Land soils in northwest China: Different soil types, vegetation cover and restoration years

Ling Ding et al.

Summary: The investigation revealed a relatively high abundance of microplastics in Mu Us Sand Land soils, with the woodland area showing a higher concentration of microplastics in the size range of 0 to 0.50 mm. Different tree species exhibited variations in microplastic accumulation, and the abundance of microplastics decreased with increasing restoration years.

Aging assessment of microplastics (LDPE, PET and uPVC) under urban environment stressors

Mariana N. Miranda et al.

Summary: The study reported changes in the chemical structure, surface morphology, and crystallinity of three different polymers in microplastic form after being exposed to different aging agents. The results suggest that microplastics undergo aging in the environment, which may affect their behavior and intensify their impacts.

Treating disinfection byproducts with UV or solar irradiation and in UV advanced oxidation processes: A review

Xin Lei et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the degradation kinetics and mechanisms of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) under UV and solar irradiation and in UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The study highlights the differences in photodegradation rates of N-nitrosamines and halogenated DBPs, and the potential predictors of photodegradation rates under low pressure UV irradiation. Additionally, the review summarizes the reaction mechanisms under UV irradiation and in HO center dot-mediated oxidation, providing insights into the degradation pathways of various DBPs.

Multipath elimination of bisphenol A over bifunctional polymeric carbon nitride/biochar hybrids in the presence of persulfate and visible light

Huazhe Wang et al.

Summary: Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN), a star material in photocatalysis and persulfate activation, was used to synthesize bifunctional biochar-doped PCN. The optimized PCN/BC hybrid not only activated PS directly, but also exhibited improved optical properties. Mechanism studies showed different degradation pathways of BPA in the CNBC/PS and CNBC/PS/VIS systems, providing insights into hybrid advanced oxidation technologies.
