Legacy and alternative per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in a subtropical marine food web from the Beibu Gulf, South China: Fate, trophic transfer and health risk assessment

Chang-Gui Pan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic magnification of legacy and alternative PFAS in subtropical marine food webs in the Beibu Gulf, South China. The results showed that most PFAS exhibited low bioaccumulation levels, with only a few substances showing trophic magnification. Overall, the risk of PFAS exposure through consumption of marine organisms was found to be relatively low.

Remediation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated soils - To mobilize or to immobilize or to degrade?

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities, with major sources being firefighting foam, wastewater effluent, landfill leachate, and biosolids. Remediation of PFAS contaminated soils is challenging due to their stability and mixture complexity. Mobilizing amendments increase PFAS mobility and bioavailability, while immobilizing amendments decrease transfer to food chain and leaching to water sources. Future research should focus on quantifying potential leaching of mobilized PFAS and monitoring long-term stability of immobilized PFAS.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water and sediments from two urban watersheds in Nevada, USA

Xuelian Bai et al.

Summary: The study measured 17 PFAS in surface water and sediments from various locations in Nevada. Short-chain PFAS were more prevalent in water, while long-chain PFAS were more detectable in sediments. Las Vegas Wash water had significantly higher PFAS levels compared to water samples from the Truckee River.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Chinese drinking water: risk assessment and geographical distribution

Liquan Liu et al.

Summary: Research studies have shown that many cities and regions in China have been contaminated with PFASs in drinking water, posing potential risks to the population. It is crucial for authorities to better control and reduce PFAS releases from industries and other sources to protect public health. Further monitoring and re-evaluation of PFAS risk assessment based on the most recent toxicological studies are needed for a science-based approach to countermeasures.

Spatial and Temporal Trends of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Global Ocean and Coastal Waters

Derek Muir et al.

Summary: PFAS, specifically PFCAs and PFSAs, have been widely detected in global surface waters since the early 2000s. The majority of measurements come from coastal seas in Western Europe, China, Korea, and Japan, with highest median concentrations reported in China's Bohai and Yellow Seas region as well as Europe's North and Baltic seas. Significant declines in median PFSAs and C7-C12 PFCAs were observed in the period 2012-2018 in these regions, and for 2004-2017 in the Great Lakes. Mass discharge estimates indicate continued substantial riverine emissions of long chain PFCAs in the coastal seas of China and reductions in emissions for Western European rivers compared to earlier time periods.
