The addition of biochar as a sustainable strategy for the remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments

Francesco Bianco et al.

Summary: Biochar is proposed as an innovative and sustainable technology for remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments, mainly through sorption mechanisms. The use of biochar can significantly improve the efficiency of PAH removal from sediments, especially when used in combination with multi-PAH systems and high dosages. Additionally, biochar has shown to decrease PAH degradation during bioaugmentation and phytoremediation of sediments, but can increase degradation when used with nitrate as an electron acceptor in low-temperature conditions.

Effects of biochar on catalysis treatment of 4-nonylphenol in estuarine sediment and associated microbial community structure

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: The study found that sewage sludge biochar (SSB) synthesized at 500 degrees Celsius (SSB500) achieved the highest efficiency in degrading 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), activating sodium percarbonate (SPC) to produce sufficient active oxygen and carbonate ions for enhanced degradation. Treatment with SSB/SPC increased microbial diversity and richness in sediments, with specific bacterial genera playing crucial roles in 4-NP degradation.

The degradation of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, DEHP, in sediments using percarbonate activated by seaweed biochars and its effects on the benthic microbial community

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: Research utilizing red seaweed-derived biochar to activate sodium percarbonate (SPC) for the degradation of DEHP in contaminated estuarine surface sediments revealed that increasing the SPC dosage and using a pyrolysis temperature of 300-900 degrees Celsius can enhance DEHP removal. RSB900 was found to be the most effective SPC activator, achieving a 63% total DEHP degradation rate within 12 hours under optimal pH conditions. Treatment with RSB-SPC also significantly increased bacterial abundance in sediment ecosystems.
