Carbon nanofiber based superhydrophobic foam composite for high performance oil/water separation

Zheng Guo et al.

Summary: The study presents a method to fabricate flexible and superhydrophobic foam composites for efficient oil/water separation by decorating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with a hollow structure uniformly onto the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foam skeleton. The CNFs not only enhance the surface roughness and hydrophobicity, but also act as numerous capillary tubes, improving oil adsorption and oil/water separation performance. The CNFs network with strong light absorption enables the foam material to have superior photo-thermal conversion capability, excellent corrosion resistance, and the ability to adsorb various kinds of oil with different densities, resulting in high oil/water separation efficiency.

Superhydrophobic, mechanically durable coatings for controllable light and magnetism driven actuators

Haipeng Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple two-step spraying method to prepare superhydrophobic and multifunctional coatings, which introduce Fe3O4 nanoparticles and F-ACNTs to improve surface roughness, magnetic property, and photothermal performance. The use of PDMS enhances interfacial adhesion and durability. The resulting coating maintains superhydrophobicity under various conditions and can be used for controlled self-propelled motion and oil removal with high efficiency.

A Review of River Oil Spill Modeling

Davor Kvocka et al.

Summary: River oil spill research has been neglected compared to coastal and offshore oil spill research, leading to significant knowledge gaps that need to be addressed through more experimental studies and model development. Additionally, there is a need to adapt and validate coastal and offshore oil spill models for riverine environments, as well as to develop remote sensing systems and detection techniques for river oil spills.

Versatile and cost-efficient cleanup of viscous crude oil by an elastic carbon sorbent from direct pyrolysis of a melamine foam

Haifeng Niu et al.

Summary: This study developed an elastic carbon sorbent through the pyrolysis of melamine foam, which possesses light weight, superhydrophobicity, high mechanical strength, and efficient oil uptake capability. The sorbent can significantly reduce the viscosity of heavy crude oil under mild sunlight exposure or low voltage, offering a fast cleanup approach for accidental oil spills under all weather conditions. Overall, the carbonized melamine foam provides an ideal material solution for large-scale crude oil cleanup through its versatile and efficient cleanup approaches.
