A mechanistic view on the neurotoxic effects of air pollution on central nervous system: risk for autism and neurodegenerative diseases

Sahreh Shabani

Summary: Exposure to neurotoxic air pollutants is strongly associated with neurological disorders, including memory impairment, communication deficits, and anxiety/depression. These pollutants increase the risk of neurodegenerative disease, ischemia, and autism spectrum disorders, but the specific mechanisms remain unclear.

Association between particulate matter air pollution and risk of depression and suicide: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Qisijing Liu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of current available studies, finding that exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 significantly increases the risk of depression and suicide, especially with long-term exposure to PM2.5. The associations were more apparent in individuals over 65 and from developed regions.

Association between short-term ambient air pollution exposure and depression outpatient visits in cold seasons: a time-series analysis in northwestern China

Yu-Meng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study assessed the relationship between short-term ambient air pollution exposure and outpatient visits for depression in Xi'an, China. It found that increases in SO2 and NO2 levels were associated with higher numbers of outpatient visits for depression on the same day, especially in cooler seasons. The study also noted a significant impact of PM10 on male patients aged 30-50 at lag 0.

Association between short-term ambient air pollution and outpatient visits of anxiety: A hospital-based study in northwestern China

Yu-Meng Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between short-term exposure to atmospheric pollutants (SO2 and NO2) and daily outpatient visits for anxiety disorders, especially in the short term. Despite differences in gender and age, there was no variation in susceptibility to air pollutants.
