Improving the Fenton-like catalytic performance of MnOx-Fe3O4/biochar using reducing agents: A comparative study

Ling Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a Fenton-like system was developed using FeMn/biochar composite and reducing agents. Among the tested reducing agents, oxalic acid and hydroxylamine showed significant enhancement in catalytic capacity of the Fenton-like process, leading to improved degradation efficiency of ciprofloxacin. The accelerated metal redox cycle in the FeMn/biochar-H2O2-HA system facilitated the decomposition of H2O2 into reactive oxygen species, which were responsible for the degradation of pollutants.

Adsorption of sulfonamides on biochars derived from waste residues and its mechanism

Yuxing Fan et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar derived from waste residues showed different adsorption performances under different conditions, with RB being the preferred biochar due to its higher concentration of oxygen functional groups. The mechanisms of sulfonamides adsorption onto biochars mainly involved pi-pi electron donor acceptor interactions and hydrogen bonds.

Solution pH affects single, sequential and binary systems of sulfamethoxazole and cadmium adsorption by self-assembled cellulose: Promotion or inhibition?

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the presence of Cd(II) decreased the adsorption of SMZ due to hydrophilic site competition, while SMZ increased the adsorption of Cd(II) through bridging and electrostatic shielding effects. This inhibitory and synergistic effects were more pronounced in the binary system at a pH of 7.5, indicating a dynamic balance between them depending on the system, pH value, and concentration ratio. DFT results suggested that SMZ coordinated more easily with Cd(II) at sulfonyl oxygen and nitrogen sites, and the cationic bridge of Cd(II) with SMZ mainly occurred in the sequential system, with a complexation-decomplexation-complexation balance in the binary system.

Active MnO2/biochar composite for efficient As(III) removal: Insight into the mechanisms of redox transformation and adsorption

Dinh Viet Cuong et al.

Summary: An active MnO2/rice husk biochar composite (MBC) with improved porous structure was prepared for enhanced removal of As(III) in groundwater. MBC exhibited a high removal capacity for As(III) and a powerful transformation capability of As(III), with pH influencing its removal efficiency. MnO2 and the BC substrate played important roles in the effective removal of arsenic by MBC.

Magnetic porous biochar with nanostructure surface derived from penicillin fermentation dregs pyrolysis with K2FeO4 activation: Characterization and application in penicillin adsorption

Qiuju Wang et al.

Summary: Magnetic porous biochars (MCHCl, MCHAc) with high BET surface areas and saturation magnetizations were prepared and used for penicillin adsorption. The adsorptions of penicillin on MCHCl and MCHAc followed pseudo primary kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, with the adsorption mechanism involving physical and chemical adsorption.

Waste tire heat treatment to prepare sulfur self-doped char via pyrolysis and K2FeO4-assisted activation methods

Qiangqiang Ren et al.

Summary: Activation of waste tire chars at different temperatures with varying K2FeO4 additive ratios enhanced the specific capacitance and promoted the formation of smaller pores and ordered graphitic structures. The addition of K2FeO4 led to the transformation of large aromatic ring systems to smaller ones and the inhibition of sulfur enrichment.

Adsorption of metals from oil sands process water (OSPW) under natural pH by sludge-based Biochar/Chitosan composite

Junying Song et al.

Summary: In this study, a sludge-based biochar/chitosan composite was successfully prepared and showed excellent removal efficiency for metals (Cr, Cu, Se and Pb) in oil sands process water (OSPW). The enhanced removal ability of the composite was attributed to its improved specific surface area, pore volume, and functional groups such as NH2, -OH and oxygen containing groups. The adsorption process was best described by the Freundlich model, pseudo second order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models, indicating that chemical adsorption played a dominant role in the removal process.
