Difficulty with Taking Medications Is Associated with Future Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias

Douglas Barthold et al.

Summary: This study found that difficulty taking medications could be an early sign of cognitive impairment and a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Patients with medication management difficulties may benefit from detailed cognitive screening for earlier recognition of ADRD. The odds of medication difficulty were significantly higher among individuals with ADRD diagnoses compared to those without ADRD.

Summary: This study analyzed data from the Health and Retirement Study to examine the changes in racial disparities in Alzheimer's dementia prevalence and incidence among non-Hispanic Black and White individuals in the US from 2000 to 2016. The results indicated that there was no significant change in racial disparities in dementia risk during the study period. Further efforts are needed to address and reduce these disparities.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease has a significant impact on individuals and society as a whole, with a large number of patients in the United States and a potential for continued growth in the future. The value of unpaid caregivers has increased despite a decline in their numbers, and healthcare costs are on the rise. Racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare persist, highlighting the need for greater diversity in dementia care workforce and clinical trials.
