Intestinal Inflammation Modulates the Expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 and Potentially Overlaps With the Pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2-related Disease

Mayte Suarez-Farinas et al.

Summary: The study shows that the COVID-19 virus has the ability to invade the intestines, and medications used by IBD patients do not significantly affect receptor expression in uninflamed intestines. There are shared molecular networks between COVID-19 infection and IBD.

Response to the COVID-19 Outbreak in Urban Settings in China

Zhao Ni et al.

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic in China, urban residents significantly increased their adherence to recommended public health practices, such as wearing masks and practicing physical distancing, while also experiencing high levels of anxiety. Factors such as being a healthcare provider, living in areas with higher COVID-19 case densities, having completed college education, meeting screening criteria for depression, and perceiving poorer health status were independently associated with anxiety symptoms. The pandemic had a profound impact on the health and well-being of urban dwellers in China.

Baricitinib plus Remdesivir for Hospitalized Adults with Covid-19

A. C. Kalil et al.

Summary: Combination treatment with baricitinib plus remdesivir was superior to remdesivir alone in reducing recovery time and accelerating improvement in clinical status among patients with Covid-19, notably among those receiving high-flow oxygen or noninvasive ventilation. The combination was associated with fewer serious adverse events.

Infliximab is associated with attenuated immunogenicity to BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in patients with IBD

Nicholas A. Kennedy et al.

Summary: Infliximab treatment in patients with inflammatory bowel disease results in attenuated serological responses to a single dose of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Delayed second dosing should be avoided in these patients, as vaccination after SARS-CoV-2 infection or a second dose leads to seroconversion in most individuals.

Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses are attenuated in patients with IBD treated with infliximab

Nicholas A. Kennedy et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with inflammatory bowel disease treated with infliximab had attenuated serological responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Additionally, the serological response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in the infliximab-treated group was further blunted by concomitant use of immunomodulators.

Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for inflammatory bowel disease 2020

Hiroshi Nakase et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses chronic or remitting/relapsing inflammatory diseases of the intestinal tract, including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). The etiology of IBD involves disease susceptibility genes, environmental factors, and intestinal bacteria. Optimal management depends on evidence-based interventions tailored by physicians.

The characteristics of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with severe COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Yuki Hayashi et al.

Summary: This study found that severe COVID-19 patients often have abdominal pain as a characteristic symptom, while there was no significant difference in the incidence of diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting between severe and non-severe patients. This suggests that abdominal pain may be a distinctive feature of severe COVID-19 infections. Further studies involving COVID-19 patients from various countries and ethnicities are needed to confirm these findings.
