Vortex-interface interactions in two-dimensional flows

Daniel Fuster et al.

Summary: The work focuses on the basic interactions between a vortex and an interface separating two incompressible fluids. It investigates how vorticity produced at an interface influences the dynamics of the interface and engenders small scales and small droplets. The study identifies critical Weber numbers that affect the rolling up of the interface around the vortex and trigger instabilities leading to the appearance of extremely small structures.

A mechanism for the amplification of interface distortions on liquid jets

Hanul Hwang et al.

Summary: A novel mechanism for amplifying distortions to the material interface of liquid jets has been identified. This mechanism is independent of flow instability and can intensify small perturbations by several orders of magnitude, potentially faster than modal mechanisms like the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The mechanism is related to the Orr mechanism and involves reorienting perturbations to amplify material interface distortions.

Immiscible Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence using mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann algorithms

H. S. Tavares et al.

Summary: The study investigated the turbulence induced by Rayleigh-Taylor instability in 2D immiscible two-component flows, comparing the results with 3D turbulence. Both miscible and immiscible cases exhibited similar growth patterns in mixing layer and velocity, with differences in initial transients. Enstrophy in the immiscible case showed a tendency to grow proportionally to t(3/2) with higher vorticity values near the interface, while the behavior of typical drop size and total interface length followed a power-law pattern. This study also validated the application of lattice Boltzmann tool for 3D immiscible cases.
