Glutathione and the intracellular labile heme pool

Rosemary O'Keeffe et al.

Summary: The study shows that glutathione is not the cellular ligand for heme and its presence can enhance heme degradation. The concentration of heme in the cytosol is extremely low and intracellular heme transfer may occur via intracellular membrane structures. If any heme escapes into the cytosol, it will quickly bind to glutathione for protection against its toxic effects.

The DnaJ proteins DJA6 and DJA5 are essential for chloroplast iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: Fe-S clusters are ancient and important for life processes. The biogenesis of Fe-S clusters involves iron acquisition, sulfur mobilization, and cluster formation. Two Arabidopsis DnaJ proteins, DJA6 and DJA5, play a crucial role in facilitating iron incorporation into Fe-S clusters during chloroplast Fe-S cluster biogenesis. Loss of these proteins leads to defects in chloroplast Fe-S protein accumulation and photosynthesis dysfunction. Evolutionary analysis shows that DJA6 and DJA5 are highly conserved in photosynthetic organisms and have a strong evolutionary relationship with SUFE1, SUFC, and SUFD.

DNA methylation is involved in acclimation to iron-deficiency in rice (Oryza sativa)

Shuo Sun et al.

Summary: This study identified widespread hypermethylation in rice seedlings under Fe-deficient conditions, particularly in the CHH context. Integrative analysis revealed a negative correlation between transcript abundance of Fe-deficiency-induced genes and nearby TEs, and a positive correlation with 24-nucleotide siRNAs. Both pharmacological and genetic manipulation of DNA methylation demonstrated a crucial role of specific methylation patterns, directed by siRNAs, in acclimation of rice to Fe-deficient conditions. Comparisons with other reports suggest that this may be a universal mechanism for plants to adapt to limited nutrient availability.
