Direct evidence for crossover and chromatid interference in meiosis of two plant hybrids (Lolium multiflorumxFestuca pratensis and Allium cepaxA. roylei)

Summary: Crossing over in meiosis plays a critical role in reducing chromosome number, with positive interference and chromatid interference being important controls. Direct evidence of chromatid interference is provided in two plant hybrids, showing a higher frequency of double crossovers involving four chromatids than expected. The physical measure of crossover interference distance is also presented, indicating the centromere as a barrier for interference.
