Studying CNS effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine using zebrafish models

Dongmei Wang et al.

Summary: Although TCM has a long history of treating brain disorders, its complex mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. Zebrafish models are increasingly used to study TCM effects on brain and behavior, showing promise for improving understanding of TCM therapeutic mechanisms and potential in treating brain disorders.

Effects of cyhalofop-butyl on the developmental toxicity and immunotoxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Bo Cheng et al.

Summary: The study found that cyhalofop-butyl has developmental and immunotoxicity effects on zebrafish, including causing shortened embryo length, yolk sac edema, and immunocyte apoptosis, leading to inflammatory responses. Additionally, the up-regulation of immune-related genes and pro-apoptotic genes, as well as the mediation of immunotoxicity by the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, were observed.

Toxicity of different zinc oxide nanomaterials and dose-dependent onset and development of Parkinson's disease-like symptoms induced by zinc oxide nanorods

Meng Jin et al.

Summary: With the increasing applications in various fields, the release and accumulation of zinc oxide (ZnO) nano materials ultimately lead to unexpected consequences to environment and human health. Our study compared the toxic effects of ZnO nanoparticles, short ZnO nanorods, and long ZnO nanorods using zebrafish larvae and human neuroblastoma cells. Results showed that long ZnO nanorods induced developmental neurotoxicity with hallmarks linked to Parkinson's disease at relatively high doses.

Cardiotoxicity induced by Cochinchina momordica seed extract in zebrafish

Zheng-Cai Du et al.

Summary: Momordica cochinchinensis is an indigenous South Asian edible fruit, and its seeds have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for its antioxidant, anti-ulcer, and potential anticancer properties. Recent studies suggest that Momordica cochinchinensis seed extract may induce cardiotoxicity through pathways involved in inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis.

Developmental neurotoxicity fingerprint of silica nanoparticles at environmentally relevant level on larval zebrafish using a neurobehavioral-phenomics-based biological warning method

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: Larval zebrafish is an ideal model for FET testing and neurotoxicity research, with locomotion profiles monitored by behavioral tracking systems. Silica nanoparticles showed significant toxicity on larval zebrafish at environmentally relevant concentrations, inducing neurotoxic effects that can be further evaluated through behavioral responses.

Genipin induces developmental toxicity through oxidative stress and apoptosis in zebrafish

Zhong-Shang Xia et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that genipin treatment inhibited hatching rates and body length, induced pericardial edema, cardiotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and nephrotoxicity in zebrafish embryos/larvae. Genipin also increased oxidative stress and apoptosis in zebrafish, indicating a potential developmental toxicity mechanism associated with oxidative stress and apoptosis increase.

Summary: This study successfully established a method to simultaneously determine six ingenane-type diterpenoids in Euphorbia kansui and vinegar-fried Euphorbia kansui. The toxicity-activity of these compounds was investigated through toxicity evaluation on zebrafish embryos and modulation of aquaporin-3 protein expression.

Summary: Aconitine (AC) exerts severe toxic effects on zebrafish embryo development, including cardiac, liver, and neurodevelopment impairment, as well as ROS-mediated mitochondrial apoptosis. High-concentration AC exposure results in deficient cardiovascular system and cell apoptosis in the heart and brain regions.

Berberine-Based Heterogeneous Linear Supramolecules Neutralized the Acute Nephrotoxicity of Aristolochic Acid by the Self-Assembly Strategy

Penglong Wang et al.

Summary: Berberine can significantly reduce the toxicity of aristolochic acid through self-assembly, attenuating acute kidney injury. The self-assembly strategy blocks the toxic site of aristolochic acid and hinders its metabolism, while also maintaining gut microbiota balance and reducing the impact on immune system activation and tumorigenesis pathways.
