Chemical formation pathways of secondary organic aerosols in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in wintertime

Jie Li et al.

Summary: A regional air quality model system was developed to investigate the chemical pathways for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in winter. The model showed significant improvement in simulating SOA by including primary S/IVOCs and aqueous reactions, with different volatile organic compounds contributing variably to SOA formation.

Simulation of secondary organic aerosol over the Yangtze River Delta region: The impacts from the emissions of intermediate volatility organic compounds and the SOA modeling framework

Ling Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of IVOC emissions on SOA concentrations in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. Two methods are used to estimate IVOC emissions, which significantly enhance simulated SOA concentrations, with the traditional two-product modeling framework showing an increase of 8%-27% at the monitoring site. Using the 1.5-Dimension Volatility Basis Set (VBS) approach increases simulated SOA by 76% but reduces POA concentration by 72%, leading to an overall decrease in organic aerosol (OA) by 12%.

Intermediate Volatile Organic Compound Emissions from Residential Solid Fuel Combustion Based on Field Measurements in Rural China

Zhe Qian et al.

Summary: Residential solid fuel combustion (RSFC) is a major cause of air pollution in China, and a study conducted field measurements from 166 rural households in eastern China to update emission factors and chemical profiles database. The study found that different fuels and stoves can affect the emission of intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs), with crop straw, fuelwood, and coal having different emission levels. Analysis showed that RSFC chemical profiles are characterized by lower branched alkanes and higher polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), allowing them to be distinguished from vehicle sources.

Unexpected Oligomerization of Small α-Dicarbonyls for Secondary Organic Aerosol and Brown Carbon Formation

Yixin Li et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that the oligomerization of small alpha-dicarbonyls on sub-micrometer aerosols leads to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and brown carbon (BrC) more efficiently upon exposure to atmospherically relevant concentrations. Carbenium ion-mediated nucleophilic addition, interfacial electric field-induced attraction, and synergetic oligomerization involving organic/inorganic species are identified as the key mechanisms for the distinct aerosol growth and light absorption in the presence of methylglyoxal.

Roles of Semivolatile/Intermediate-Volatility Organic Compounds on SOA Formation Over China During a Pollution Episode: Sensitivity Analysis and Implications for Future Studies

Liqing Wu et al.

Summary: S/IVOCs play a crucial role in the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in China, with SOA concentrations being highly sensitive to S/IVOC emissions. Upgrading the S/IVOC emission inventory and chemical evolution parameterization in the WRF-Chem model has improved the model's ability to resolve observed SOA concentrations, but there are still discrepancies between simulation and observation. Additionally, SOA concentrations in China are predominantly influenced by S/IVOC emissions compared to other precursor parameters.
