Landslide identification using machine learning

Haojie Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel machine-learning and deep-learning method to identify natural-terrain landslides using integrated geodatabases. The method was demonstrated to have high accuracy in a case study, with CNN achieving the highest identification accuracy. By utilizing machine learning and deep learning techniques, the proposed method shows outstanding robustness and great potential in tackling the landslide identification problem.

Optimization of state-of-the-art fuzzy-metaheuristic ANFIS-based machine learning models for flood susceptibility prediction mapping in the Middle Ganga Plain, India

Aman Arora et al.

Summary: This study tested and compared novel advanced-machine learning algorithms in predicting flood susceptible areas in a low-altitude, sub-tropical floodplain environment in the Middle Ganga Plain, India. The ANFIS-GA model outperformed other models with the highest success rate and prediction rate, suggesting further study in similar environments for establishing a benchmark model with highest accuracy and sensitivity.

Flood susceptibility modelling using advanced ensemble machine learning models

Abu Reza Md Towfiqul Islam et al.

Summary: This study applied and assessed two new hybrid ensemble models, Dagging and Random Subspace (RS) coupled with Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for modeling flood susceptibility maps at the Teesta River basin in Bangladesh. The models performed well in predicting flood occurrences and could help in reducing flood-related threats and implementing effective mitigation strategies in the future. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) of ROC was above 0.80 for all models, with the Dagging model showing superior performance compared to RF, ANN, SVM, RS, and benchmark models.

Increasing glacial lake outburst flood hazard in response to surge glaciers in the Karakoram

Nazir Ahmed Bazai et al.

Summary: Unlike glaciers in other parts of the world, Karakoram glaciers show stable or increasing mass in response to global climate change, leading to the 'Karakoram anomaly'. The region experiences irregular glacier surges that pose a threat of ice dam lake formation and outburst flooding. This study documents 179 GLOFs from 1533 to 2020, predicting future increases in frequency due to glacier surge cycles and anomalous behavior.

Flood hazard mapping of Sangu River basin in Bangladesh using multi-criteria analysis of hydro-geomorphological factors

Rashed Uz Zzaman et al.

Summary: This study evaluated 12 hydro-geomorphological factors to create flood hazard maps, with the ANP model showing high accuracy under 1-day maximum rainfall conditions and the hazard map under 100-year return periods indicating a large population and infrastructure at high flood risk.

Location-allocation modeling for emergency evacuation planning with GIS and remote sensing: A case study of Northeast Bangladesh

Mahfuzur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study developed models using machine learning and multi-criteria decision making methods to improve flood emergency planning in the northeastern region of Bangladesh. The research identified the suboptimal distribution of emergency evacuation centers and proposed mathematical approaches to address this issue. The proposed models have the potential to reduce human casualties, property losses, and improve emergency operations in the area.

Rock glacier inventory, permafrost probability distribution modeling and associated hazards in the Hunza River Basin, Western Karakoram, Pakistan

Javed Hassan et al.

Summary: This study compiled the first complete inventory of rock glaciers in the Hunza Basin, western Karakoram, and modeled the probability distribution of permafrost. The analysis showed that destabilized rock glaciers were closely linked to the 0 degrees C isotherm, causing significant damage to infrastructure in the region. Improved policies related to disaster risk reduction and hazard mitigation can be achieved through quantifying rock glacier dynamics and permafrost in the area.
