Techno-economic assessment of landfill gas (LFG) to electric energy: Selection of the optimal technology through field-study and model simulation

Virginia Manasaki et al.

Summary: Landfill Gas (LFG) is a renewable energy resource, and the selection of optimal technology for electric energy production should take into consideration factors such as LFG quality, production rate, environmental legislation, flue gas emissions, carbon footprint, and technology maturity. Various technologies, including Internal Combustion Engines, microturbines, and Gradual Oxidation, can be used for electric energy production from LFG, with microturbines showing potential for profitability.

Co-oxidative removal of arsenite and tetracycline based on a heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction using iron nanoparticles-impregnated biochar

Dun Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the co-oxidative removal of arsenite and tetracycline by iron nanoparticles-impregnated carbons, showing promising results for the removal of contaminants in contaminated water. The spent carbocatalyst still maintained reasonable catalytic activities after regeneration, suggesting potential for reusing the catalyst for further water treatment applications.

A societal transition of MSW management in Xiamen (China) toward a circular economy through integrated waste recycling and technological digitization

Tonni Agustiono Kurniawan et al.

Summary: Xiamen is currently facing challenges in municipal solid waste management, such as lack of a complete garbage sorting and recycling system, absence of waste segregation between organic and dry waste at source, and incomplete information about the generated waste. Solutions involve enhancing source separation, improving recycling systems, legislation, terminal disposal facilities, incorporating digitization, and establishing standards for recycled products. Learning from the effectiveness of Hong Kong's waste management system is crucial for Xiamen's future MSWM development.

Arsenic removal in aqueous solutions using FeS2

Dun Fu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the technical feasibility of pyrite and/or persulfate oxidation system for effective arsenic removal from aqueous solutions. Persulfate addition promoted complete removal of arsenic at optimized conditions, meeting WHO's arsenic maximum contaminant limit. The redox mechanisms involved electron transfer from pyrite to Fe3+ for persulfate decomposition, oxidizing As(III) to As(V).

Resource recovery toward sustainability through nutrient removal from landfill leachate

Tonni Agustiono Kurniawan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using coconut shell waste-based activated carbon for ammonium stripping and adsorption, achieving almost complete removal of NH3-N and 90% removal of COD at optimized conditions. However, for effluents with COD higher than 200 mg/L, further biological processes are needed for complete removal of refractory compounds.
