Organic fouling in forward osmosis: Governing factors and a direct comparison with membrane filtration driven by hydraulic pressure

Francesco Ricceri et al.

Summary: The study indicates that initial flux and calcium have the strongest influence on the extent of flux decline and recovery in FO and hydraulic pressure-driven processes. The impact of different draw solutions in FO becomes more apparent when the flux is relatively low.

Wastewater treatment with starch-based coagulants for nutrient recovery purposes: Testing on lab and pilot scales

Ilaria Righetto et al.

Summary: This study tested starch-based coagulants for treating reject water and optimized the process using Response Surface Methodology. The best dosage and pH combination generated high removal percentages for TN, TP, TOC, SS, and VSS, but led to an increase in NH3-N concentration. The sludge produced with natural coagulant was found to be of better quality compared to conventional coagulants.

Fate of organic micropollutants in reverse electrodialysis: Influence of membrane fouling and channel clogging

Lingshan Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that real wastewater caused more membrane fouling and channel clogging in reverse electrodialysis (RED), while the transport and adsorption of OMPs were higher in real seawater conditions compared to synthetic counterparts, and significantly decreased in synthetic wastewater conditions, highlighting the key implications for industrial applications.

Multipurpose treatment of landfill leachate using natural coagulants - Pretreatment for nutrient recovery and removal of heavy metals and micropollutants

Ilaria Righetto et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of tannin-based HTH product in improving landfill leachate quality for nitrogen recovery purposes. The optimized combination of dosage and pH showed removal of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total organic carbon, while ammonia increased. The treatment also demonstrated decent removal of micropollutants and metals in the leachate.
