Distribution and toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during CaO-assisted hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge

Tingting Liu et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of sewage sludge (SS) with and without calcium oxide (CaO) was conducted at temperatures ranging from 160 to 240 degrees Celsius. The study evaluated the yield and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), showing that temperature increase led to higher PAH concentration in hydrochar, while the addition of CaO reduced PAH yield with optimal results observed at 200 degrees Celsius with 3-6% CaO.

Effect of Ca-Si-Al Element Proportion on the Formation of Aluminosilicate Minerals and Detoxification of PAHs in Fly Ash from MSW Incineration during the Hydrothermal Process

Dezhi Shi et al.

Summary: The formation of aluminosilicate minerals during hydrothermal treatment can significantly affect the detoxification efficiency of PAHs in fly ash, with different Ca/(Si + Al) and Al/(Si + Al) ratios impacting the formation of specific minerals such as tobermorite. Among these ratios, the Al/(Si + Al) ratio has a more significant influence on both tobermorite synthesis and the removal of PAHs and their toxicity equivalent quality. Additionally, the presence of hydrocalumite can reduce the detoxification efficiency of PAHs, highlighting the importance of controlling mineral formation during the hydrothermal detoxification process.
