Highly enriched anammox within anoxic biofilms by reducing suspended sludge biomass in a real-sewage A2/O process

Jianwei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for stably enriching anammox in mainstream by utilizing competitive differences between anoxic biofilms and suspended sludge. Experimental results showed that anammox was significantly more abundant in anoxic-carrier biofilms compared to suspended sludge, and batch tests confirmed the effectiveness of anammox for nitrogen removal. Overall, this study demonstrates a promising and practical alternative for enriching anammox bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Two-stage anoxic-oxic (A/O) system for the treatment of coking wastewater: Full-scale performance and microbial community analysis

Huaqiang Chu et al.

Summary: A full-scale coking wastewater treatment plant with a two-stage anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic (A1/O1/A2/O2) process was systematically investigated, showing excellent removal capacity for COD, ammonia, nitrate, and total nitrogen. The microbial community analysis revealed significant changes in bacterial communities during the AOAO process, with shifts in functional microorganisms responsible for organics and nitrogen removal. Metagenomic sequencing also indicated variations in amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism between the primary and secondary AO processes.

Nitrogen removal and bacterial mechanism in a hybrid anoxic/oxic baffled reactor affected by shortening HRT in treating manure-free piggery wastewater

Jianzheng Li et al.

Summary: By decreasing the hydraulic retention time to 20 hours with a constant reflux ratio of 200%, the hybrid anoxic/oxic baffled reactor (HAOBR) showed high removal efficiencies for high NH4+-N and low COD/TN ratio wastewater, averaging 79.1%, 99.5%, and 93.2% for COD, NH4+-N, and TN removal, with anammox being the main approach for TN removal.
