Macroscopic effects of nano and microscopic phenomena in clayey soils and clay rocks

Pierre Delage et al.

Summary: Long term investigations of various geomaterials have identified two distinct nano and micro mechanisms governing macroscopic volume changes. The collapse of inter-aggregates pores in a ordered manner affects the volume decrease under mechanical compression in low plastic structured clays and dry compacted soils. On the other hand, the significant reactivity of montmorillonite minerals to changes in water content leads to significant changes in the initial porous matrix in plastic soils.

Estimation of water retention behaviour of bentonite based on mineralogy and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests

Ayman A. Abed et al.

Summary: A water retention model based on soil mineralogy and microscopic features of material behavior is developed in this paper, with simple formulae proposed to estimate water content and interparticle void ratio. The model's validation using published data for bentonites shows promising results, indicating its potential applicability to other geomaterials. The insights provided into the links between microstructure and macroscopic behavior offer a valuable tool for indirect estimation of water retention behavior in porous materials with known mineral composition and microstructural data.

Evolution of fabric anisotropy of granular soils: x-ray tomography measurements and theoretical modelling

Chao-Fa Zhao et al.

Summary: X-ray tomography measurements were used to provide experimental data on contact fabric anisotropy inside shear bands for two granular soils, supporting the validity of ACST. The results showed unique values for fabric anisotropy and coordination number at large strains, with the rate at which the critical state is approached increasing with the roundness of the material. The evolution of fabric anisotropy measured from the experiments was well reproduced by the proposed evolution law.
