Hierarchical deep-learning neural networks: finite elements and beyond

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: HiDeNN is developed by constructing structured deep neural networks (DNNs) hierarchically, and a special case called HiDeNN-FEM is established for representing the Finite Element Method. In HiDeNN-FEM, weights and biases are functions of nodal positions, optimizing nodal coordinates during training to enhance both local and global accuracy. By fixing the number of hidden layers and increasing neurons, rh-adaptivity is achieved for further improvement in solution accuracy. The generalization of rational functions is achieved by developing three fundamental building blocks of deep hierarchical neural networks, allowing for the construction of deep learning interpolation functions for various theories like Lagrange polynomials and NURBS.

A kd-tree-accelerated hybrid data-driven/model-based approach for poroelasticity problems with multi-fidelity multi-physics data

Bahador Bahmani et al.

Summary: A hybrid model/model-free data-driven approach is proposed to solve poroelasticity problems, which introduces different formulations to simulate the coupled diffusion-deformation of fluid-infiltrating porous media with varying amounts of available data. The efficiency of the model-free data search is improved by introducing a distance-minimized algorithm accelerated by a k-dimensional tree search, and numerical experiments are designed to verify the implementation and compare the performance of the proposed model with other alternatives.

Physics-Informed Deep Learning for Computational Elastodynamics without Labeled Data

Chengping Rao et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new method called Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) is introduced to model PDE solutions without using labeled data for computational mechanics problems. By taking displacement and stress components as DNN outputs inspired by hybrid finite element analysis, the accuracy and trainability of the network are significantly improved. A composite scheme based on multiple single DNNs is established to forcibly satisfy the initial/boundary conditions, overcoming issues related to weakly imposed conditions in traditional PINN frameworks.
