Preheating and premixing effects on NOx emissions in a high-pressure axially staged combustor

Tommy Genova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of flame liftoff and ignition timescales on NOx emissions of a reacting methane-air jet in a vitiated crossflow. It finds that a decrease in jet temperature leads to an increase in ignition delay, providing a benefit for NOx reduction, especially for jets injected at or close to an ignitable mixture fraction. Additionally, a thermally driven delay in the axial stage results in greater NOx reduction compared to a mixing delay.

The Influence of Pressure on Flame-Flow Characteristics of a Reacting Jet in Crossflow

Michelle Otero et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the effects of elevated combustor pressures on a lean premixed reacting methane/air jet injected into a lean vitiated crossflow. The results show that higher pressure leads to greater jet penetration, but a decrease in flame liftoff point and ignition delay time. Emissions measurements confirm the increase in NOx with pressure, but the staged configuration reduces global outlet emissions.

The Effect of Pressure on NOx Entitlement and Reaction Timescales in a Premixed Axial Jet-In-Crossflow

Bernhard Stiehl et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the pressure dependency of a lean premixed jet injected into a lean vitiated crossflow, and discusses the reasons for the production of nitrogen oxides at high pressure. By combining experimental data with computational fluid dynamics models, the analysis validates the relationship between flame stabilization and pressure.

Partial Premixing Effects on the Reacting Jet of a High-Pressure Axially Staged Combustor

Tommy Genova et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of partial premixing on a reacting jet-in-crossflow in a stationary gas turbine relevant combustor, by varying fuel allocation and premixing levels to explore flame characteristics. The experimental results show different combustion behavior and flame morphology, providing an experimental basis for studying the influence of partial premixing on gas turbine combustion performance.

Transverse injection of rich, premixed, natural gas-air and natural gas-hydrogen-air reacting jets into high-speed vitiated crossflow at engine-relevant conditions

Neil S. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transverse injection of rich, premixed natural gas and air, and natural gas, hydrogen, and air into a high-speed vitiated crossflow under engine-relevant conditions. The research found that flame stabilization near the injector resulted in a significant increase in NOX emissions for both NG-air and NG-H-2-air reacting jets. The flame position and structure were observed to be different for various jet equivalence ratios, indicating different combustion behaviors.
