High thermoelectric performance at room temperature of n-type Mg3Bi2-based materials by Se doping

Xiaobo Mo et al.

Summary: This study reports the Se-doped n-type Mg3Bi2 materials with improved thermoelectric performance, achieving a ZT of 0.82 at 300K and a peak ZT of 1.24 at 498K, comparable to n-type Bi2Te3 and Te-doped Mg3Bi1.4Sb0.6. The enhanced performance is attributed to the high carrier concentration and mobility as well as the reduction in thermal conductivity. These materials show great potential for thermoelectric power generation and cooling applications near room temperature.

Improvement of Thermoelectric Properties in Te-Doped Zintl Phase Magnesium-Antimonide

Md. Mahmudur Rahman et al.

Summary: The Zintl compound Mg3Sb2 is a promising candidate for efficient thermoelectric material with the ability to fine tune carrier concentration. In this study, Mg3.8Sb2-xTex compositions were synthesized and characterized using XRD and SEM. The substitution of Te at Sb sites effectively changed the majority carriers from holes to electrons.

Improved thermoelectric performance of n-type Mg3Sb2-Mg3Bi2 alloy with Co element doping

Yanqun Chen et al.

Summary: By adjusting the Mg content and doping with Co element, the n-type Mg3Sb2-Mg3Bi2 alloy was optimized to improve electrical conductivity and power factor. Moreover, the phonon scattering was found to be enhanced due to the larger atomic mass of Co compared to Mg, leading to a reduction in lattice thermal conductivity and achieving a high ZT value.

Thermoelectric properties of yttrium-doped Mg3(Sb,Bi)2 synthesized by melting method

K. Kihou et al.

Summary: A low-cost synthesis procedure was established for Y-doped Mg-3(Sb,Bi)(2) that can be easily scaled up for mass production. Samples of Mg3+delta YxSb1.5Bi0.5 were synthesized via a melting method and the sample Mg3.3Y0.02Sb1.5Bi0.5 exhibited the highest dimensionless figure-of-merit (ZT) of 1.16 at T = 759 K.

Improved Thermoelectric Properties of N-Type Mg3Sb2 through Cation-Site Doping with Gd or Ho

Jiawei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates Gd and Ho as n-type dopants for Mg3Sb2 thermoelectric materials, finding them to exhibit higher doping efficiency and superior carrier concentration compared to Te. Codoping with Te leads to reduced thermal conductivity and enhanced power factor values at high temperatures, resulting in peak zT values well above unity at 725 K.

Nb-Mediated Grain Growth and Grain-Boundary Engineering in Mg3Sb2-Based Thermoelectric Materials

Ting Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that Nb does not enter the Mg3Sb2 matrix but forms a wetting layer along the grain boundary, modifying the interfacial energy and accelerating grain growth. Modeling suggests that the grain boundary resistivity appears to be reduced by Nb-enrichment. This study confirms grain boundary scattering in Mg3Sb2 and reveals the potential role of metallic additives in enhancing grain growth and reducing grain boundary resistivity.
