Ultrasound-sensitive nanodroplets achieve targeted neuromodulation

Harriet Lea-Banks et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using ultrasound-sensitive nanodroplets in combination with Focused Ultrasound (FUS) can achieve neuromodulation in the rat nervous system without disrupting the blood-brain barrier. Results show that this method can induce neurosuppression or neurostimulation through local delivery of small molecule anesthetics or targeted mechanical effects.

INVESTIGATION OF THE ACOUSTIC VAPORIZATION THRESHOLD OF LIPID-COATED PERFLUOROBUTANE NANODROPLETS USING BOTH HIGH-SPEED OPTICAL IMAGING AND ACOUSTIC METHODS

Qiang Wu et al.

Summary: The vaporization process of phospholipid-coated perfluorobutane nanodroplets (PFB NDs) was studied using ultrahigh-speed optical imaging, B-mode ultrasound, and passive cavitation detection. The results indicate that PFB NDs can be vaporized at moderate peak negative pressures, pulse lengths, and pulse repetition frequencies, making them potential cavitation agents. Application-specific thresholds should be defined based on the desired biological/therapeutic effect.

Summary: The combination of focused ultrasound and superheated phase-shift nanodroplets is a promising strategy for targeted drug delivery with high spatial precision. This technology addresses the issue of poor drug loading and enables the activation of nanodroplets in circulation.
