Extended Lifetime of Respiratory Droplets in a Turbulent Vapor Puff and Its Implications on Airborne Disease Transmission

Kai Leong Chong et al.

Summary: The study found that in high humidity environments, the lifetime of small particles in respiratory droplets is significantly extended, allowing them to be transported much further by turbulent eddies. These findings provide insight into optimizing indoor ventilation and humidity control strategies and are crucial for mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic in the current autumn and upcoming winter.

Two-layer thermally driven turbulence: mechanisms for interface breakup

Hao-Ran Liu et al.

Summary: The breakup criteria of drops or bubbles in turbulence is commonly believed to be determined by surface tension and inertia, but buoyancy can also play a significant role. Numerical studies on two-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection for immiscible fluid layers have shown that buoyancy can have important effects on interface breakup, leading to different types of breakup depending on the Weber number.

Turbulent Flows With Drops and Bubbles: What Numerical Simulations Can Tell Us-Freeman Scholar Lecture

Giovanni Soligo et al.

Summary: Turbulent flows laden with large, deformable drops or bubbles are common in nature and industry, presenting challenges in numerical simulations due to the multiscale nature of the flow. This review discusses the advantages and limitations of commonly employed numerical methods, as well as the issues arising from the limited range of scales that can be solved. Guidelines and best practices are defined based on comparisons of different methods using droplet size distribution as a benchmark.

Growth of respiratory droplets in cold and humid air

Chong Shen Ng et al.

Summary: The growth or shrinkage of liquid droplets is determined by the ambient conditions, with droplets experiencing growth followed by shrinkage in cold and humid environments due to supersaturation. A model for predicting droplet growth based on axial RH was proposed, culminating in a temperature-RH map as an indicator for droplet fate. Results were in good agreement with DNS simulations, providing critical insights for understanding droplet behaviors in respiratory puffs.
