Mechanical behavior and durability of coral aggregate concrete and bonding performance with fi ber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars: A critical review

Linlin Zhou et al.

Summary: Utilization of coral aggregates in concrete production can solve raw material shortages in remote islands, but issues such as strength loss and durability performance need further research. Proposed solutions include pre-treatment protocols and utilization of non-corrosive FRP bars to improve the performance of coral aggregate concrete. Further investigation on durability performance and FRP bars reinforced CAC is needed to promote its application in ocean engineering.

Feasibility of using geopolymers to investigate the bond behavior of FRP bars in seawater sea-sand concrete

Bai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using geopolymers as alternatives to ordinary Portland cement in improving the bond performance of FRP bars in seawater sea-sand concrete, finding that the geopolymer binders enhance the splitting tensile strength of concrete and improve the bond behavior of FRP bars. The combination of FRP bars and SWSSGC is feasible and provides a promising approach for the application of geopolymers in SWSSC structures.

Optimization of mix proportion of alkali-activated slag mortars prepared with seawater and coral sand

Bai Zhang et al.

Summary: An innovative building material, SC-AAMs, prepared with seawater and coral sand, was proposed to effectively utilize marine resources for sustainable development in construction industry. Experimental results indicated that increasing alkali activator modulus and alkaline contents improved compressive and flexural strengths but affected setting time and drying shrinkage. The optimal mixture for SC-AAMs was determined to be M-s = 1.2, N/B = 4%, W/B = 0.45, and R-s = 100%. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses showed that the alkali-activated materials changed reaction hydrate products and improved interfacial microstructures.

Compressive stress-strain behavior of seawater coral aggregate concrete incorporating eco-efficient alkali-activated slag materials

Bai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of eco-friendly slag-based alkali-activated materials to improve the weak characteristics of coral aggregates in concrete. Results showed that alkali-activated seawater coral aggregate concrete exhibited better performance than cement-based coral aggregate concrete and a model was established to explain the relationship between stress-strain curves, elastic modulus, and concrete compressive strength.
